In addition to helping pay one month of past due rent that I desperately needed, you have given me something much greater, kindness and hope and joy and love, and for that I am eternally grateful! I appreciate every single one of you, and Modest Needs, for caring so deeply about others that they do not even personally know. It is beautiful and a blessing and I am so happy to be a part of it! I am pleased to announce that by the end of this month I will finally be caught up on rent and be on my way to better days thanks to all of you! I could not have done it by myself without your help. A lot of the stress I was carrying for so long has already been lifted after hearing my grant was funded and I am already looking forward to finding a new job, working on my dreams, and enjoying the upcoming fall with family and friends! Thank you a million times over!!! You guys are awesome!!! I wish you all the best and many blessings! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I Cared for My Mom With MS For 3 Months and They Didn't Pay Me! Now My Cats and I Will Be Evicted!

My Story:

Hi! My name is Shannon. I'm a 44-year-old woman living in the suburbs of Philadelphia with my two awesome and hilariously adorable cats. I'm a former high school teacher who left teaching in 2010 to take care of my mom who was diagnosed with MS. After all these years, by the Grace of God, my mom has regained much of her health and is independent with an amazing quality of life. Now that she is doing better, I can get back to exploring my passions for art and photography. I have dreamed of traveling the world, so I hope to plan that soon.

In the beginning of the year, my mom decided that she wanted to cut back her caregiving hours, as she had been feeling a lot better. However, her coordinator ended up stopping the program completely without our knowledge. I was working, caring for my mom without realizing that I was not getting paid for any of it. I have been her paid caregiver for over 10 years. It took almost 3 months for us to get back into the program, and I never ended up being paid for those three months.

On top of that, my car broke down, and I was unable to get it fixed. I ended up maxing out my few credit cards to pay rent and other monthly bills. I have gotten current on all my bills except rent where I am consistently 2-3 months behind. Although hopeful and optimistic, I feel like I have been stuck in an emotional and physical state of high stress, tension, and anxiety. I have had to put everything in my life on hold until I get my rent and finances together.

I have been renting a car to do DoorDash in addition to caring for my mom, and although the rental fees and gas are very high, I have been working nonstop to make a little profit each week to chip away at the past-due rent. I am exhausted.

I have been in communication with my landlord over the past few months and paying him whenever I can, but he is elderly, and his relatives have taken over his finances. They are not happy that my rent is still not caught up, and I am worried that they will evict me because they do not know me as a person. I have paid my rent on time for four years, but they do not care that I have fallen on hard times. I am worried that me and my cats will have nowhere to live, and I can't afford a move or new place, as the rental market is outrageously high. I've been under a large amount of stress for a long time, and I just really need to stay in my current home to get my life back on track.

This one-time assistance with one month of past due rent will impact me positively in so many ways. I'm so close to making it out of this mess. This would give me the last push of hope and love that I need to make it over the finish line. After being caught up on my rent, I can breathe, relax, and focus on living a joyful life again.
