After Being Diagnosed with Cancer, I'm Struggling to Keep Our Home! Please Help.
My Story:
I earned my bachelor's degree in organizational leadership and am currently working as a certified peer recovery coach/certified peer recovery mentor for individuals who are experiencing substance use disorders. I chose to work in this field and with my patients because 33 years ago I started down the path of recovery myself. I know all too well the hard road set before them, as I have walked this road myself. I do not consider this a job, but rather, I consider this a calling, my purpose in this life. In addition to the work that I do, I have been fortunate enough to have two beautiful sons who were my motivation to keep myself on the road to recovery. Then, I've been even more blessed because two years ago, I became a grandmother. While experiencing one of life's greatest gifts, seeing my child become a parent, I was also faced with a huge challenge when I was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer.
The diagnosis shook me to my core, but I decided to keep the faith and fight. I underwent major surgery to remove the mass and began chemotherapy. The physical changes in my body ranged from losing all my hair to dental issues. As if the diagnosis was not enough, it all happened during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which despite my best efforts, I contracted the virus twice. And while I continue chemo two Fridays a month, they have also found some cancer cells in my lymph nodes on the lower right side of my pelvis. Through it all, I thank God for my life, and I am choosing to fight every day. I have so much to live for, my sons, my beautiful granddaughters, myself, and the people I work with.
The treatments, medical bills, and the time that I've had to take off work have caused my family a number of financial issues. The most important setback we're facing is in regard to our rent. I'm going to spend time out of work again in March, and I don't know how we're going to be able to cover our rent, so I'm very humbly asking for assistance with that month of rent. This support would be a huge source of stability for my family during these difficult times, and it will allow me to focus on my health moving forward. Thank you.
