My Husband & I Lost Work to Medical Issues. Then, Our Car Broke Down. Now We Need Help with Rent!

My Story:

I have been an elementary school teacher for 16 years, with all those years spent in Title 1 schools with at-risk students. My husband and I have been married 28 years, and in the beginning of our marriage, we drove tractor trailers around the country before settling down. He had a lawn service business in Florida and now that we moved back to Oklahoma this June, he is starting up his mobile tire service. We have been blessed with one son who is 20 years old. He graduated high school this past summer, as he had to take 6 months off school to care for both my husband and myself in 2021. He is hoping to find a job soon and is pre-enrolled in technical school with the hopes of becoming a welder. He is an incredible help to us along with our rescue dog and foster dog.

In 2021, my husband was struck down by an illness that left him unable to get out of bed, and as a result, we started facing financial issues. In June of 2021, I was helping him and was injured in the process. The result was tibial plateau surgery, and I was unable to walk for 5 months. We moved back to Oklahoma in June and things were improving, even though we were still living paycheck to paycheck due to losing all savings in Florida. Suddenly, our only vehicle blew up. This is the only way for both of us to get to work, so we had to get a new one. The tax, title and registration were not included, and it cost us over a thousand dollars out of pocket. We paid for this in December at the expense of our rent, and now, we are in an unexpected financial bind. We have been going to food pantries so we can use that money to pay utilities. Still, we're behind on our rent now, and we're facing an eviction.

As people, we have always given and helped when we can, but now we are in an unfamiliar place. I'm very afraid for my family's future if we don't receive assistance with our rent. It would be a huge blessing to receive this assistance with our rent, and it will truly do so much to keep us stable going forward. I will be doing summer school soon, and I'll be able to start a savings again, thereby giving us a cushion for the future emergencies we might face. This support will also enable our son to see the importance of giving a hand up to others and how he can help change someone's life. We have always been on the giving side and hope that with help, we can get there again.
