After a Heater Repair Shorted My Thermostat, My Electric Bill Went Through the Roof & I Need Help!
My Story:
In addition to being a mother, I am employed as an insurance agent and notary public. I have a 22-year-old adopted son who just graduated from Boston College, and he will be attending Harvard in the fall for his master's degree. He is my joy and my sunshine. I am also a caregiver to my 86-year-old mother who has dementia and is currently in a rehab center due to a brain bleed she received after a recent fall. She is my best friend. My other best friend is my rescue dog, Red. I know people always say this, but it's true that he's the one who rescued me.
As much as I hate to say it, I definitely live paycheck to paycheck right now. I've always worked hard to stay on top of my finances and to try to put enough away for an emergency fund, but between helping my son with medical bills and school and traveling to care for my ailing mother, I don't have anything leftover when I get paid. This has left us extremely vulnerable to emergencies, and the latest one has been incredibly frustrating to deal with to say the least.
My landlord replaced the heater last July, and long story short, when the work was done, it apparently shorted out the thermostat. Due to the pandemic, at the time, I was on a budget billing system with PECO. My monthly bill typically ran $90 per month, and then it slowly started increasing, which I thought was weird. Then, I check the deferred balance and the bill had rung all the way up to over $3,000. I nearly had a heart attack when I looked at the bill. Luckily my landlord has agreed to cover some of the amount since they feel partially responsible, but the rest of the balance is on me to cover.
Unfortunately, I don't have the means to cover this balance, and it's starting to affect my credit. More importantly, it's going to drive up the cost of my utilities from month to month, and I can't afford to pay more. I'll fall further and further behind if that happens. Right now, I'm trapped in a cycle, so I'm very humbly asking for assistance with this electric bill as a way out of that. Ever since I discovered that enormous balance, it feels like the world has been closing in on me. I've had a hard time focusing on the things that matter the most to me, my mother and my son. This assistance would be a tremendous relief financially speaking, but it would also give me a chance to refocus and take care of the people in my life who matter most. For that, I would be truly grateful to everyone who lends me a generous hand with this bill.
