This person has left the following thank you note:
Five years ago, I started my journey as a clinical psychology PhD student at Virginia Commonwealth University with a merit-based scholarship that allowed me to pursue my career goal of becoming a clinical psychologist without worrying about the financial stress of graduate school. I knew the day would come where I might have to relocate for my clinical residency, which is required for me to graduate, but I did not allow that stress to stop me from trying to achieve my educational goal. The time has come for me to relocate to my dream clinical residency and the financial stress of moving has been lifted thanks to the generous Modest Needs donors. I want to convey my heartfelt gratitude to all the Modest Needs donors who work tirelessly to make the world a better place for individuals like me. And to all those great souls who provide their unconditional support for the great cause of this organization. You may not get to see the smile you put on all of our faces, but know for sure that all you do every day has a tremendous impact on our happiness and success. Kindness is definitely still alive and well in this world. People such as yourselves definitely make the world a better, happier, more caring place. I cannot wait to graduate and begin my career as a clinical psychologist so that I am able to pass on the kindness that the Modest Needs organization has shown me.
I'm Trying to Complete My Education & Serve My Patients, but I Need Help Moving Please!
My Story:
I am a first-generation, black, male clinical psychology doctoral candidate at Virginia Commonwealth University. I was raised by a single mother who is now retired. I was fortunate enough to be granted full, merit-based scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate school, which is how I have been able to afford my education. I work part-time as a research assistant and part-time as a student clinician at the Richmond Veterans Affairs Hospital. However, I am not paid for my time at the Richmond Veterans Affairs Hospital because it is considered part of my graduate training.
The final year of my doctoral training in psychology has to be spent in a 1-year clinical residency program, which is my final requirement before I can graduate. I applied to 14 different programs without trying to limit my potential based on geographic location. I was matched at my top choice residency at the University of California San Diego and San Diego Veterans Affairs Medical Center joint program, and now I have to relocate in June 2022. I was born in North Carolina and currently live in Virginia for graduate school, so I have never moved this far before. Unfortunately, my mother, graduate program, and soon-to-be residency program are unable to help cover the cost of moving expenses. I am very proud of what I have been able to accomplish regarding my education despite coming from a disadvantaged background, but the moving expense of the U-Haul has put me in an unexpected financial bind.
In order to complete my move and my education, I'm very humbly asking for assistance with the expense of renting a U-Haul to move across the country to California. I have fought long and hard to receive an education that will allow me to achieve my dreams, and now that I'm on the verge of being able to do that, it looks like I'm going to come up short. It's my ultimate dream to be offered a postdoctoral fellowship after I complete my clinical psychology residency, which will allow me to continue helping veterans with PTSD and alcohol and substance use treatment. There is a lack of representation among minority psychologists, and I have been told by many patients that they are proud of me for trying to increase the number of black, male psychologists within the Veterans Health Administration system. With your help, I will be able to finish my education and work hard for my patients. For that I would be deeply grateful. I will be able to dedicate my life to serving my patients and my community thanks to the generosity that I'm shown.
