I'm a Ph.D. Student Struggling with Cancer & Need Help Affording the Cost of Treatment!

My Story:

I am a Ph.D. student at UC Riverside, and my husband is a postdoctoral researcher at Caltech. In March 2021, I found out that I have breast cancer. I am a legal permanent resident of the United States, but I am originally from Iran. After my diagnosis, my parents got a US non-immigrant visa and came to stay with us during this time. So, there are four of us living in the same household.

The medical bills from my diagnosis have been incredibly difficult to deal with, and they're really taking a huge financial toll on us. The cancer treatments have been taking a physical toll on my body, and my doctor recommended that my husband and I freeze my eggs because the treatments could leave me infertile. We really want to have children, so we decided to undergo the process of having my eggs frozen. That treatment increased our expenses as well, but we needed to preserve a future for our family. In addition to the medical bills from my diagnosis, our landlord raised our rent because my parents have come to live with us. Even after explaining the situation, they haven't relented. The raised cost of rent has made it more difficult for us to pay for our coinsurance and copays which cover the cost of my treatment.

We have medical bills due at the beginning of next month, and we won't have any way to pay them before they go to collections. If they reach collections, it could jeopardize our financial situation even further, and it could jeopardize my health too. It's difficult for me to focus on my battle against cancer when I'm worried about the roof over my family's head. More than anything, I want to beat this cancer and continue my journey towards practicing medicine so that I can give back to my community in a meaningful way every day. I know that I can beat this cancer, graduate, and find a career that will allow me to provide for my family and pay this assistance forward. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone for helping me in my battle against cancer. I will never forget this.
