User-submitted image - Click to see real sizeThe news today that my application had been funded left me gobsmacked - in the best possible way. I've been on both the giving and receiving end of acts of generosity and kindness, but somehow I'm always surprised by the goodness of people. Maybe it's all the doom and gloom of these times, compounding my own series of devastating losses. It's easy to fall down a rabbit hole of worst-case scenarios and fears for the future. This money, but especially this show of support, makes me feel like I'm going to be ok. I'm going to get through my current challenge, return to the place where I feel at home, and be able to move forward. I'm so glad this organization exists. It really IS possible for people to help each other out in modest ways that have a major impact. Thank you so much.

After Losing My Daughter & Moving Cities, I Need Help Paying Rent Please!

My Story:

I am a single woman, aged 58. Last March, my younger daughter Sophie (aged 27) died of fentanyl poisoning after a long struggle with complex PTSD, depression and addiction. The next week, Covid-19 shut everything down and I lost my full-time job as a childcare provider and my part-time job in retail. It's been an almost unbearably hard year for me, but luckily, I was able to receive Canada's emergency relief funding and then qualified for unemployment insurance, which I will continue to receive until mid-August this year.

I was living in Toronto when all of this happened, and then decided to move closer to family in Ottawa. In the meantime, my roommate agreed to cover all of the expenses, so I left to go be with my baby granddaughter. That worked well until recently when my roommate abruptly decided to move out. My building management won't allow sublets, so I'm on the hook for about three months of rent, and I can't afford to pay all of it. I haven't fallen behind as of yet, but I'm facing a shortfall come this summer and need help or else I could lose my home.

My whole family is planning to move back to Toronto, and if I lose my home, I won't be able to move back with them. I also have job prospects there that could be promising enough for me to get by. I wanted to do my best to get the support I needed after losing my daughter tragically, but now I'm finding myself in a hardship that I don't have any way out of. This help would allow me to return to my life back in Toronto with my family, and for that I would be very grateful. Thank you all for your understanding and kindness, now more than ever.
