User-submitted image - Click to see real sizeMy wife and I are beyond blessed and thankful for your generous donations! We cant thank each and every single one of you who have took the time to reach out and donate to fund our request to help get me a new handicapped accessible shower. This is something that has been much needed as I have tried to make a regular small bathroom that I can barely fit my wheelchair in work for the past 12 years. Actually having a handicapped shower, will allow me to shower safely and allow me to be able to access and utilize my bathroom. This will increase my quality of life tremendously and allow me to keep my independence and clean hygiene! You all are truly the best and my wife and I can not again thank you all enough, we are so beyond grateful and truly brought to tears by your generosity. With much love! God bless, Mike (a T11-T12 complete paraplegic)

Paraplegic Needs Accessible Shower

My Story:

I am a 35 year old paraplegic. I broke my back working construction 12 years ago and have been wheelchair bound ever since. My entire life changed at 23 years old. I had to find new ways to do old things. This includes everything from personal hygiene, to driving, to finding a job that would accept me as a disabled individual as well as a job I could even perform in my new life in a wheelchair. I have come so far. I DID find a job that would accept me and I could successfully perform. I work in retail and although my income isn't high, I am thankful for it nonetheless. Then seven years ago, I met my beautiful wife. She has encouraged and uplifted any dream I've had from my chair and is my biggest fan for sure!

I don't get any type of assistance at all such as Social Security or Disability. We have been renting a non-accessible home together for our entire relationship and it is becoming more difficult to 'make work' in my situation. More specifically, our bathroom makes it difficult for me to clean myself. The shower is not accessible at all for me. I've always used a portable shower chair and transferred to it from my everyday chair but in the last several months, my legs have tightened up so bad I fall nearly every time I try to transfer. Some people may not know but spinal cord injury issues stem so much further than just the back. My legs get tight from no movement, and my bowels & bladder don't work like they should, for example. So for me, not being able to shower or properly clean myself is a burden for me and my wife. And besides, for a grown man to not be able to take a shower is kind of humiliating.

I'm hoping you'll help me to afford an accessible shower so I can properly clean myself. I fear if I don't receive assistance in purchasing an accessible tub/shower that my wife will continue to have to give me sponge baths when she isn't even suppose to be lifting over 10 pounds (I'm a 6'2' 175 man). My wife is amazing but it is a lot on her. This funding will provide SO SO MUCH relief to me. I'm actually in tears as I type this. I assure you this would change my life significantly, help me stay as independent for as long as possible and as always, I will continue to give back just as I always have. Thank you so much for your time.
