Testimonial

This person has left the following thank you note:

Words cannot express how thankful I am for you. Due to your generous donation, I am able to pay for an apartment which allows time for my house to be repaired from flood damage from hurricane Florence. This will ensure my house is mold-free and safe to live in before I actually move back into it. Your contribution is appreciated and has made a significant difference in my life. It's easy to become discouraged and feel alone in this world after going through the devastation of a natural disaster. Due to your kindness and generosity, my faith has been restored.

Flood Damaged Senior Veteran Citizen's Home, Need Rent Help

My Story:

I am an 80 year old widowed veteran and the father of two grown adults, one of whom lives with and helps care for me. I worked for almost 50 years, then after retirement, I worked for the town of Nichols, SC for 10 years taking care of the town clean-up and other similar jobs. I had to quit this job in 2015 to take care of my wife who had advancing Alzheimer's and could not be left alone. At this time, my daughter also moved back in with me to help care for her mother and me and to recover from the loss of her only child, my only grandson. Losing a child (and my child's only child) is a loss that neither my daughter nor I have ever fully recovered from and likely never will. My wife lost her battle with Alzheimer's in January 2016 and my daughter has continued to live with me since that time.

In September 2016, my town was devastated by a flood resulting from Hurricane Matthew that ruined not only all houses in town, but all businesses, basically shutting the entire town down. I was lucky to have a church group volunteer to repair my home which made it possible for me to move back to my home in October 2017. In October 2018, the town of Nichols was again flooded - this time as a result of Hurricane Florence. This flood once again wiped out our little town. Due to this flood, my daughter & I are not able to live in our house and are having to pay rent of $668/month. FEMA was helpful for 3 months of rent, but has denied further assistance. We need Modest Needs help with our rent for this month.

We are hopeful our house will be repaired within two months, making each month's rental payment crucial. Since my daughter and I both live paycheck to paycheck, and we had to spend all of our savings repairing our home after the 2016 flood, we simply do not have the money right now. As soon as we are back in our house, my daughter will be able to resume work and we can once again handle the monthly household bills. Thanks so much for your consideration. This would be an absolute life-saver for me and my daughter.
