User-submitted image - Click to see real sizeI applied for the Modest Needs grant almost 6 months ago when I left an abusive marriage with 3 minor children in tow with me. Since applying for this grant, my children and I have continued to endure a massive amount of hardships; including our car being repossessed, my mother passing away, utilities be shut off and on-going child custody and child support battles. I received the notice from Modest Needs that my grant had been fulfilled by community donors and I had forgotten I applied for this. Although it will take years for me to get out of debt, rebuild my credit and heal ourselves from the trauma of abuse and severe lifestyle changes, this grant comes at a time when we find ourselves completely desolated. I am overwhelmed with relief and gratitude and my hope in humanity has been restored. Words cannot express how this grant will critically contribute to addressing the issues we have become subjected to, as well as providing my innocent children with a sense of security and better understanding of community engagement. I look forward to the time when I can pay it forward. With sincerest gratitude, Marisol Natividad

Domestic Violence Forced Us to Move; Please Help Us Stay Safe In Our New Place!

My Story:

I am a 39-year old female from San Diego. I have been committed to community activism for over 20 years, I was elected as the VP to our local workers union, and I am in Masters degree program for Organizational Leadership at Colorado State Global Campus. I have been an admin secretary for 10 years. I live in the same town where my dad was raised and where he raised my sisters and I. I recently escaped a psychologically, verbally and financially abusive marriage from a man whose parents grew up with my parents. The divorce not only affected me emotionally, physically and financially, it had a negative impact on the social life my children and I were accustom to.

My children and I moved in August 2018 and had to come up with a down payment and incurred moving costs. We are getting behind and now I have to represent myself through the divorce because I have no more money for attorney fees. I want to restore my children and ensure we become stabilized until I can finish my Masters degree and look for a higher paying job. We need Modest Needs help with our rent this month.

This funding will help us get back on track with our bills and allow me to put food on the table for my children. If granted, your help will be an investment into a single mother of three who has dedicated more than half her life into community activism, while simultaneously raising socially conscious children. They give me piece of mind to continue leading against social injustices, now including what I have suffered personally. It will restore my children's faith in community organizations and society. It will also inspire me to seek additional and creative means for assistance, so that I can stabilize our family and continue to help others.
