This person has left the following thank you note:
This has been the greatest Christmas gift our family could have ever received! We have been barely hanging on by our fingernails to keep our electricity on, and this couldn't have happened at a better time! We have been working with our electric company just to keep our power on due to my disability and needing power for my infusion pump and medication. So thank you, THANK YOU, to everyone who contributed and helped our family, and to Modest Needs, for providing the platform for people to receive help; it truly means the world to me! From my family to yours, Happy Holidays and a brighter New Year!
Loss of Medical Insurance Caused Out Of Pocket Bills, Please Keep Our Lights On
My Story:
I am a 44-year-old married mother of two, my oldest is 25 and no longer lives at home and my youngest son is 14 years old. He just hit a major growth spurt to 61 and 200 pounds and started high school, all at the same time! My husband is 40 and is employed as a full-time chef at the commissary that provides the food for all of the restaurants at the airport. I am disabled and receive Social Security Disability monthly. I suffer from an extremely rare neuromuscular disorder called Stiff Person Syndrome, which causes muscle spasms throughout the body that are so extreme that they can tear muscles, ligaments, and tendons, and dislocate, and break bones. This has also caused a disorder called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome 1, which piggybacked on my current pain and spasms in my left arm and turned the pain level up to an 11, so as of now I have to spend about 90% of my time bed-ridden with no use of my left arm. We also have two beautiful cats, one of which is my therapy/ESA animal.
We normally earn enough to pay our bills and basic expenses every month, but it is paycheck to paycheck and with no savings. In the summertime, money gets tighter because my husband is given fewer hours at work. However, this summer has been especially difficult since my son and I lost our Medicaid coverage. I have Medicare due to disability, and Medicaid covered my Part B expenses; doctors visits/copays, outpatient services and surgeries, physical therapy, and home health care, all of which I used and still need but now cant afford. I have had to stop my weekly home healthcare visits to receive immunoglobulin infusions that kept my symptoms semi-controlled, and now have to pay 20% of every medical bill, office copay, and can no longer afford to have any kind of outpatient therapy, surgery, infusion etc., because I now have to choose between feeding my family or medical care, paying rent and bills or seeing a specialist, so I have to suffer so my family doesnt. Over July and August, I have had to pay over $600 in medical charges for myself and $200 for my sons ADHD medicine that he has to take daily. These unexpected medical expenses have caused us to fall behind and we need Modest Needs help with our electric bill.
This has been the hardest bill to stay on top of this summer due to higher summer costs, but we look forward to when the weather changes and our electric bills drop. My husbands work hours also start increasing again in September and throughout the rest of the year and into spring. We were accepted several years ago with rental help through Modest Needs and were honored by how much people cared enough to help our family. I have tried every other resource to find a way to help with this, but it has been nothing but dead ends and we are at the point of desperation. No electricity in the summertime in Arizona can be dangerous, even deadly, especially considering my health issues. We could also run the risk of eviction since keeping the utilities in working order is included in our lease. So I am asking and pleading urgently for any help we can get, and we are beyond appreciative for this community and for Modest Needs. Thank you so very much.
