This person has left the following thank you note:
Thank you very much for your support. When I graduated from school, I thought things would get better and we would start getting ahead. I did not realize the costs associated with starting a job were so high. As each new bill came in, we got further from the money we needed to protect my son. I am grateful for all of those who read our story and found kindness in your hearts to help my son get guards to protect his wrists. I am hopeful these will prevent lifelong damage to his wrists and deadly infections. I am excited to start my new job soon and look forward to being able to pay it forward.
Parents Need Help With Cost of Wrist Guards for Special Need Child to Prevent Infection
My Story:
I am a married mother of two little boys ages 7 and 10. My 10 year old has a rare genetic disorder called Smith Magenis Syndrome. He does not let that stop him. He loves music and dance. His little brother is 7 and full of energy. He loves to play soccer and be outdoors. My husband works full time and I just completed graduate school for social work. I will be starting work at a local hospital soon.
We live in a rural community and have previously made enough money without a vehicle to pay our expenses. With me starting work far from home, we needed to purchase a vehicle and there were many associated costs with this. It will be over a month until I receive my first pay check and most of that will need to go into overdue bills from having started work with no income to pay for gas or insurance. With these new expenses we do not have the finances for a much needed medical expense. My 10 year old with special needs has been biting his wrists for about a year now and insurance cannot cover guards because they are coded for bone and joint issues, where his is self injury. We have bought many more affordable options and therapies with no success. Other kids with his disorder have had good luck with this type of guard. He does not understand the consequences of severe infection or feel pain when he bites himself. We found a company who will work with us for self pay, but we are unable to afford the cost and need to get them sooner to help prevent infection. We need your help with this cost.
Your assistance will allow our family to have guards for my son's wrists so that he can remain infection free and avoid any future medical costs associated with infection. It will also allow us to have peace of mind knowing he is safer as we watched other children with his disorder spend time in the hospital from blood infections due to wrist biting. These guards are expected to last at least a year before needing new ones and with his genetic disorder, he grows very slowly, it could be 2-3 years before we need to save for this expense again. I will be established at my new job by then.
