Single Mother Needs Utility Help After a Hit and Run

My Story:

I am a single mother to a teenage son. In 2014 I became a Certified Sign Language Interpreter. I decided to work for a non-profit agency that provides services to the Deaf communities. I also took trainings and became a Support Service Provider to empower DeafBlind population to do things we take for granted: weekly grocery shopping, Christmas shopping for a loved one, enjoying a sporting event or even the movies. I am studying for my National Interpreter Certification to work legally in Pennsylvania (my employer has been nice enough to pay for all my testing to get closer to my goal). My son is 16 years old and has a great big heart. He was diagnosed with ADHD in 2005 and is now struggling with depression. His dad disappeared from his life about 2 years ago and has been unreliable since.

My problems began around February 2015, when I had to move because it was becoming increasingly difficult to commute my son back and forth to a different school district every day. I split from my partner of seven years to take care of my son's needs and no longer was sharing the responsibilities of house bills and chores. My situation got worse on July 14, 2017, when my car, while parked in front of my work, was involved in a hit-and-run and was damaged to the point of it being non-drivable. Although I was not at fault, I have to pay a $500 deductible as the person who hit me did not have car insurance so I am responsible for the $5600 in damage. I need Modest Needs help with my utility bill.

This will help me and my son with a feeling of stability. I am worried about my son in this situation because he has had such a tough childhood and I want to be more reliable and take this worry off of his mind. I am taking courses through my employer to improve my sign language skills and will get a raise once I pass my certification test. That will give me the extra income I need to save in case of emergency for the future.
