This person has left the following thank you note:

User-submitted image - Click to see real sizeOur family is so grateful for your generosity and willingness to help in our time of need. This grant will allow us to keep our monthly expenses current, and will relieve a great deal of stress that we have experienced from our daughter's life-threatening illness and catastrophic medical expenses. Words are difficult to find, to express how deeply grateful we are. There is so much negativity in the world, and we are constantly bombarded with stories of hatred, crime, selfishness and tragedy, but your generosity, selflessness, compassion, optimism and charity are stellar examples that there are many, many good people in our world. The world, in general, needs to see more of this kind of love being shown to our fellow man. We wish all of you only the very best, and that your good works be returned to you a hundred-fold. We look forward to being on the other side of this equation, so that we can help others who are in similar situations.

Family Needs Urgent Help with Health Insurance after Child Spent 3 Months in ICU

My Story:

I am a married mother of four wonderful children. My husband works full-time as a mechanical technician for a community college, and I recently began working part-time as a music and choir director for two different churches.

Our third daughter, who has always been the picture of health, was stricken with severe ulcerative colitis approximately one year ago. She was initially hospitalized for two weeks before being able to return home. A few months later, this past spring, she was admitted to the ICU with a collapsed lung, blood clots, and sepsis. She experienced a pulmonary embolism from a failed procedure and was transferred to the St. Louis Children's Hospital ICU, where she remained for three months. My husband was on FMLA and held down the fort at home. I took the max amount of FMLA my job allowed, but when it could not be extended, I was forced to resign my position in order to be by my daughter's side. Although my husband and I are both working again, we have incurred large medical bills, with staggering out-of-pocket payment obligations. We've fallen behind on some of our bills as a result of the missed work and the medical costs, and we're doing all we can to get back on track. Our biggest fear at present is that we could lose our health insurance, which is absolutely essential to our family.

We need Modest Needs' help to pay the past due balance on our insurance coverage, as our policy will be cancelled if we do not pay within the next 60 days. Due to our daughter's need for continued medical care, losing our health insurance would be devastating to our family and could put us in a longer-term financial crisis. My husband has great insurance through his employer, but the costs are prohibitive for myself and our children to be on that plan. Our daughter still requires regular medical care, as well as home health supplies, and we cannot risk losing this coverage, despite the high deductible renewing with the calendar year.

This funding will allow us to get caught up with our household bills and not face the possibility of losing our health insurance which we are reliant on for our daughter's medical care. I am seeking an additional job to keep things more stable going forward. This has obviously been a trying time for our family, and we hope we will never face a situation like this again. Your help would be a light in the financial darkness we've been facing since our daughter's medical issues began. It is refreshing to see the generosity of others making a difference. We have always made it our priority to help those in need, but now we find ourselves on the other side of that equation. Life can change so quickly. Please know that your help would be deeply appreciated.
