Testimonial

This person has left the following thank you note:

We are overwhelmed with gratitude for your generousity. As a single parent I have had to overcome many financial obsticules but this was definitely the hardest. That's why your generous gift means so much. I definitely believe we go through these experiences so that we can help others who find themselves in similar situations. Being kind to someone who is struggling is a powerful thing and we never know how much that means until we are in need ourselves. Your donors' contributions have meant the world to us and we definitely plan to use this experience to give to others through your organization. Thank you so much for all that you do for all those in need.

Single Mom Needs Rent Help after Debilitating Illness Caused Gap in Employment

My Story:

I am a single mother of two- one now grown daughter, and one teenage daughter who lives with me. My older daughter now has a son of her own, and my grandson makes me proud every day! He is seven, and lost his father in 2015. That is so much to go through for such a young child, but he is a strong little guy. We have two cats- Albums, who is simple and sweet, and Patsy, who is smart and devious. They help to make our house a home! I am a Biology teacher and love what I do. I truly believe that a teacher's enthusiasm should shine through and also believe that students should succeed because of their teachers, not despite them. When I was in college, I wanted to be just like Jane Goodall, but I have kids and live in Wichita, KS, so that dream will have to wait until I retire!

A couple of years ago, I was working as a Biology professor at a community college. It was a job I held for 10 years. I was exposed to a large dose of MRSA and ended up in the ICU at the hospital for a month. I had inhalational MRSA phenomena and H2N3. The illness ravaged my system and left me temporarily disabled. Due to my health state, I was unable to work and lost my job. I have gotten two jobs since I was released by my doctor- one as an adjunct professor, and a second job as a tutor. Both are great jobs, but they do have gaps due to school schedules.

I am in need of help to pay my rent. Due to the long period in which I was out of work, I am only just getting back on my feet. Due to the break between semesters, I do not have a full paycheck this month and cannot afford to cover all of my bills. While it is not unexpected to have a gap in pay cycles between semesters, being disabled and out of work for such a long period left me unable to prepare for this financially. I am worried that my daughter and I will lose our home if I cannot find a way to bridge this gap.

While I was disabled, we were homeless for a brief time. While that is embarrassing for me to admit, it gives you some perspective about how scary it is to be facing the same possibility again. Shelter is something we cannot go without. Your help would mean so much to us. It would be the difference between us being on track with our bills, or struggling to catch up and falling short for a much longer time. My kids and I have had a rough two years, but we made it through them. This would go such a long way for us, and show my kids that someone cares.
