Testimonial

This person has left the following thank you note:

The day for me started as just an average one that dealt with the challenges presented by my MS. One of those most serious challenges was navigating my wheelchair in a close space to access and open/close the door to my washer/dryer machines. Not only was it uncomfortable and awkward ... there was a danger every time of me toppling forward because of my balance and falling. But the day changed to a much happier one when I received word that a whole lot of very kind and generous folks like you had made donations to Modest Needs to fund the purchase of a Doormatic Automatic Door Opener. I can't express enough thanks for your assistance. Now everyday will be better ... thanks to you.

Wheelchair Bound Senior Citizen Needs Help to Purchase Home Accessibility Device

My Story:

I am a 77-year-old woman with advanced multiple sclerosis. My days are spent in my motorized wheelchair or my adjustable bed. While I qualify for the care of a nursing home, we have made adaptions to our home and life so I can stay with my husband in the home we have shared for the past 46 years.

The fixed retirement income we have limits us to paying for just the usual monthly expenses, and we are mindful to live within our means. This makes it difficult to afford special home equipment or modifications even when we need them. I am only able to do things around the house with any independence while I am in my motorized wheelchair. Unfortunately, due to the positioning of the legs on my chair extending beyond my reach, I do not have the ability to open and close doors for myself.

I am asking for Modest Needs' help with an automated door opener so I have the ability to open the door without assistance from my husband. This may sound like a luxury device, but without it, I am in danger of falling out of my chair when I attempt to do simple household tasks without my husband's help. My husband is 85 and has serious health troubles of his own. With this device, I will be able to help with laundry and other household chores.

Your assistance with this item will allow me to continue living safely in my home. I will also have the ability to do things I have not been able to do on my own in a long time. I have an emotional and physical need to remain in my home as possible, and it is very scary to know that I may not be able to safely do so without the ability to have doors stay open while my chair goes through. With your help, this problem will be solved, and will also improve our lifestyle and feelings of security in a significant way.
