User-submitted image - Click to see real sizeI AM SO INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL AND CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH! My grandfather and father are veterans of WWII and the Vietnam War, respectively, and I am an Afghanistan veteran. Unfortunately, none of us are rich and my father had earned his G.E.D. through the military and is now retired. Please know that I have never asked for handouts like this before and have always been self-reliant. Your assistance has kept me from having to ask for more money from my retired parents. In the meantime, I will be submitting final documents within three days to a federal agency for processing of my security clearance. I have already been offered the job, but I have to wait for the paperwork to be processed. Your assistance will also relieve the burden associated with having to worry about paying rent for one month while I train for my new job. 911 took a toll on my faith in humanity. When I was in Afghanistan during my deployment, I saw death and destruction. I have seen ugliness in people over the last seven years; my soul had been worn thin at this point. Your help has re-ignited my personal drive to excel and has bestowed hope that people can be generous to those who are willing to work hard but are in dire need of temporary assistance. After I get back on my feet and settled in to my new job, I vow to return your generosity by helping those with genuine need on modestneeds.org. PLEASE DO NOT EVER FORGET THAT I AM TRULY GRATEFUL AND FULLY UNDERSTAND THE EXTENT TO WHICH YOU HAVE HELPED ME. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. --Sean

Honorably-Discharged Afghanistan Vet: Facing Eviction While Awaiting Pay From New Job

My Story:

I am a 34-year-old veteran who was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force a few months ago. Prior to my separation from the military, I served as an Officer in charge of 42 Airmen, and later volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan to stop Taliban insurgents from killing U.S. and Allied Forces. Needless to say, civilian life is a change of pace for me. When I returned home from deployment, I focused my attention on the career goals that I had put on hold in order to serve our country. In addition to studying for my GMAT exam so that I can enroll in an MBA program, I have been hired to begin a full-time position with the Department of Homeland Security. It seemed like everything was working out really well up until last month, when the federal government shutdown caused my new job's start date to be delayed for several weeks.

The savings that I had been surviving on over these last few months have run out, and I do not have any money left to afford my rent this month. While I am very relieved to have found stable employment, I am in danger of being evicted before I receive my first paycheck. This is a very stressful month for me. The threat of being evicted from my apartment has made me wonder if I would have been better off staying in the military rather than facing so much difficulty in adjusting to civilian life.

I cannot ask my elderly parents for financial help. They have done everything in their power to be supportive of me, but I know they are struggling with their own expenses right now. I feel extremely guilty that they are so worried about me when they should be enjoying their retirement. A few days ago my mother cried, and told me that she and my father will sacrifice their own needs to make sure that I have money to afford food. For obvious reasons, I cannot allow my parents to be burdened my short-term hardship. I have never before had to ask for donations of any kind, but I really need help to pay my rent this month.

If you can assist me with my past due rent, you will not only be offering me relief from a tremendous amount of anxiety, you will be relieving my parents of their worry as well. Your help would transform this difficult transition into a positive new beginning for me, and I would never forget it. As soon as I am back on my feet, I plan on returning to Modest Needs as a donor so that I can pay it forward.
