Your help with unusual expenses for a family on a limited income means that we can still have a car to drive, food an the table, and keep our utilities on! It also means I can afford medical care and medication, and avoid hospitalization and even possible death. You are amazing, and your kind hearts and generosity mean more than you will ever know.

Help Nurse with Cancer and MS Make a Full Recovery

My Story:

She was a registered nurse for 20 years, an advocate against domestic violence and child abuse, a volunteer in India and foster for homeless dogs. That is, until she was hit with MS and cancer that will require a total stem cell transplant. With constant treatments for her diseases, she is unable to work, and now subsists entirely on a small social security income.

Early this month, this Tucson, Arizona woman had another round of bad luck when she was involved in a car accident. She has comprehensive insurance, but with such a small income has no way to afford the deductible. Without the ability to pay the deductible, she'll no longer have a means of transportation to get her to her cancer and transplant sessions. A bus is not an option, because with MS, a rise in the body's temperature by even one degree can lead to irreparable nerve cell damage.

This applicant tells Modest Needs, 'I am very afraid of being dependent, isolated, immobile, and homebound! As a nurse, I know that an ill person who becomes homebound and isolated and unable to enjoy their usual social interactions/activities goes downhill fast, both mentally and physically.'

Thus, under our Independent Living Grant, this individual is asking for one-time assistance with her deductible, which will allow her mobility, peace of mind and chance to fully recover from her cancer.

Sound like a good investment to you? Then please consider making a contribution to Modest Needs and using your points to vote that we fund this application. Once this request has 100% of the points it needs, we'll immediately remit payment to her insurance company for the full cost of the deductible. And afterward, you'll receive a thank you note from this resilient woman, in her own words, expressing just how much your 'small change' changed her life.

Thank you for considering this application and for your ongoing support of Modest Needs.
