Help Single, Pregnant Mom Without Fridge
My Story:
She is a 26-year-old single and pregnant mother to a five-year-old little girl, and she just moved into an apartment of her own in East Chicago, Indiana. This mom works as an at-home provider, assisting the elderly with things like laundry, cooking meals, shopping and house cleaning.
While most rental apartments come with major appliances, the place this individual chose is without a refrigerator. She saved up enough money to buy a used fridge, but it broke down almost immediately after purchase. Now she's stuck without a way to feed her child healthy, home-cooked meals. As of now, she must do daily grocery shopping in order to provide safe foods.
This young parent is going back to school after the birth of her second child to obtain a BA so that she can find a better job with higher pay, so that she can save up for similar emergencies in the future. But, as of now, she has no one to turn to.
So, this single mom with one on the way is asking for one-time help to purchase a working refrigerator under our Self-Sufficiency Grant. With this assistance, she can better care for herself and her child, and ease the worry of tainted foods making them sick.
