This person has left the following thank you note:
On today of all days, you don't know how huge a gift you've given to me and my nephew. The day couldn't have gone any better than to find out that so many donors from Modest Needs ended this special day so perfectly. What a wonderful day indeed. I can't wait to call my sister to tell her the good news. She has supported me through the advocacy process and comforted me when she new I needed it. I have to tell you that I feel comforted and blessed right now. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, I will keep you in my prayers, always.
Autistic Boy Given up by Parents
My Story:
I became the guardian of my 7-year-old autistic, nonverbal nephew after his parents gave him up. It is just the two of us. I'm 61, we live together and we both receive Social Security disability.
My nephew needs help from Modest Needs to pay for a Special Needs Advocate. As hard as I've tried, the school won't give him adequate speech services. He's been diagnosed with a severe speech and communication disorder because of his autism and he requires additional services in the form of functional speech communication to advance. As his past advocate, I've not been effective this year, and his educational planning calls for assistance beyond what I've been able to provide. He needs a more experienced person to take on the challenge of obtaining the appropriate services. It is an expense I cannot afford on my own.
I thought I could financially take care of whatever my nephew needs but I can't. The insurance company has refused to cover services even though it's based on a medical necessity. His parents do not contribute financially and don't feel a need to. Without Modest Needs, I don't know how I'll pay for this.
I don't know how to teach him to talk and because I can't, I feel guilty that I'm letting him down. He tries at home an school to communicate by pointing, but sometimes it's hard to understand what he wants. He becomes frustrated and gives up. I'm not qualified to help him where he needs it and it's hard to watch him every day. I do my best not to show how useless I feel when I see him give up.
Funding will allow us to obtain desperately needed services. I'll learn from an advocate and in turn be able to return to the advocate role myself. When my nephew learns language and can comprehend, I'll be able to tell him about Modest Needs and the many people who helped him. God bless you for your help. Thank you.
