User-submitted image - Click to see real sizeThank you for your generous donations and your support during my fight to beat breast cancer! These past 8 months have changed my life forever. I now look at life completely different. I never thought I would say this, but cancer has changed my life for the better. I have met some amazing people during this journey and have realized how many incredible people I already had in my life. Life threw me a curve ball, but I am going to do everything I can to get through it and continue to live my life to the fullest, each and ever day! The statistics are sickening: 'One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime,' or '24 people every 60 minutes are diagnosed,' (Susan G. Komen for the Cure). There are not any major statistics on young women with cancer, other than they have a higher mortality rate. If you would have asked me a year ago if I ever thought I would be diagnosed with breast cancer, I would have been the first to say NO. I plan on taking everything I have learned through my journey and teaching others that cancer does happen to young people and we can prevent it with early detection! Cancer is a terrible thing and I would not wish it on anyone! Thank you for all of your support!!! I may be fighting a terrible disease, but it is thanks to giving people like you that I am going to be able to get through this! Love, Lauren

Car Insurance: 23 y/o, Cancer

My Story:

On October 1, 2007, I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 23. It began in May of 2007. I found a lump in my breast by accident, and became concerned, so I sought help.

Initially, every doctor I saw assured me that it was highly unlikely for a woman of my age to have breast cancer, and that the lump was more likely a fibrous mass. One doctor suggested I get an ultrasound, which then came back negative for cancer. For a while I was relieved, until the lump tripled in size, and I became adamant about finding a referral to a specialist who could do a biopsy, and put an end to the mystery. Most ever test came back positive, and I became a 23-year-old breast cancer patient.

I met with five different oncologists before I found someone with whom I felt comfortable. Given my age, and the aggressive nature of my tumor, I felt that many doctors may want to use my case as a way to build credibility. Every doctor had a different game plan, and wanted a different sequence of drugs to be administered. I had never felt so confused. I wondered why so many of the best doctors in Southern California would have such differing views on the best way to treat my particular situation.

After selecting a doctor that was on my insurance plan, I thought life would finally become easier. On the day that my insurance should have begun, I was told we would not be receiving new insurance. I was required to wait for this change to become effective before I could begin treatment. I finally began treatment in November, but am now faced with paying a considerably larger amount out of pocket for my health insurance. I have also been advised to begin eating organic food to help maintain my health during treatments, but I can't imagine paying so much more for food, since it's already so expensive. The rising cost of gas isn't really helping my situation, either. It's now $4.15 per gallon in California and I have to drive to work every day and to many doctor's appointments that aren't always nearby. I'm getting by, but it seems to be getting harder and harder.

I am a recent college graduate, trying to make my way through my first year of a real job. I had been focused on researching graduate schools prior to this diagnosis, in hopes of returning to school in the fall of 2008. It appears my dreams are on hold as I must overcome this cruel disease.

I am trying to mentally and physically prepare myself for the long road to recovery. I finished my first round of chemotherapy on February 28th and underwent a bilateral mastectomy on April 3rd. Luckily, the surgery was covered completely by my insurance, but I still incurred thousands in chemotherapy bills.

By assisting me with this simple payment of car insurance, I can continue to heal from my surgery with peace of mind. Thank you very much for your consideration.
