Unexpected Ambulance Charges
My Story:
I am retired on fixed social security. I am also diabetic with high blood pressure, vision and circulation problems. One day I experienced something wrong with my swallowing. It felt like something was lodged in my throat. A friend took me to the nearest hospital. However, once seen by the hospital staff, they felt I could be better treated at another local hospital.
They called an ambulance and I was transported to Washington Hospital Center for treatment. The reason for my request is that due to the transport companies late or delayed billing procedures Medicare will not pay. The service occurred January 1, 2008 and I received my first bill for service on March 22, 2010. Upon receipt, I contacted the transport company immediately.
I have spent several hours on the phone and corresponded with them to clarify the billing. I have been in dialogue with them ever since but no resolution. They continue to send me bills. It has now gone into collections. This ordeal has been a frightening nightmare and has been taxing to my health. I manage my limited finances well, and I take pride in that. This bill however, is extraordinarily unreasonable and is outside my budget.
My insurance generally covers all of my medical care. However, the receipt of the bill falls outside the statute of limitations and is not coverable. This situation is greatly unfair. In the midst of this, I feel blessed to learn about your organization. Your assistance is much needed and I will be forever grateful.
