As My Mobility Declines, My Job is Being Threatened. Please Help Me Afford a New Wheelchair!

My Story:

I am a 65-year-old woman living alone. I have my master's degree in Social Work, and I work full-time for a non-profit where I help people recovering from addiction find work. I am an employment peer supporter and a certified benefits planner. I help people understand how working will affect their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and their Social Security Disability Income (SSDI). I used to be on SSI myself, and I was told I was unemployable, but I proved them wrong and worked myself off SSI 20 years ago.

I have several genetic disabilities and it is getting harder and harder for me to walk. I have a muscle wasting disease and a 56-degree inoperable bend in my spine. On top of that, I have advanced arthritis in my back and several of my joints, as well as several bulging disks. Finally, I'm in need of a knee replacement as well. From month to month, I don't have much left over after I pay my rent, pay for all my medications, pay for my groceries, pay for yard care for the house I rent, pay for gas, utilities, phone, and insurance. As my mobility fades, I desperately need a lightweight electric wheelchair that I can load into my car by myself, so I can continue to work and continue to take care of myself. Unfortunately, I don't have enough income to afford a wheelchair on my own, so I'm very humbly asking for assistance with purchasing one.

My insurance is willing to cover part of the cost of a wheelchair, but even then, I can't afford it on my own. Mostly, I'm worried about keeping my job. My coworkers have been so supportive of me, and they bought me a gaming chair for the office, so that I can sit comfortably for the day, but my boss has been less understanding. When I have trainings at other places, I must have someone transport my chair to go to the trainings, and my boss gives me push back every time I must have my chair transported to a training. I am afraid if I don't get a wheelchair soon, that I can transport myself, they are going to find some reason to fire me. I love my job more than anything, and so I would be deeply appreciative of all of the people who lend me a hand with purchasing a wheelchair so that I can keep working. I will never forget this tremendous act of compassion. Thank you all in advance.
