This person has left the following thank you note:

To Modest needs and its donors. Thank you. I rarely ask for help, I believe I need to be accountable. But recently, I've also learned the necessity of expressing that I cant do it alone. I am beyond grateful to all of those who helped me, supported me financially so I can get the medical care to be the most successful nurse I can be. I am also grateful for the lesson donors from Modest Needs have given me. In life, I can't do it alone, whether it be money, with my time, or just with simple communication of sitting down with a friend. This lesson is something I constantly need reminding of. Modest needs has not only chosen to support me in my endeavors, but has also helped me develop the faith that when I ask assistance will be provided. I recently got the answers I needed to move forward in treatment of my neck and shoulder. This gift of medical equipment I will honor, as it will play a vital role in my recovery. In this process I have felt seen and connected. Thank you.

Help Provide a Mattress To Alleviate Pain and Help With Medical Needs

My Story:

I live with my wife, our two cats, and our hedgehog. My wife works full time and is our primary income. I am a full time nursing student and a volunteer EMT. I am hard of hearing and my goal is to become an emergency department nurse and American Sign Language interpreter. I tutor other students a couple hours a week in ASL, but have no income apart from my disability payment. When I first started disability it defined me, but now I live my life working with a disability not a person who is disabled.

In November 2017 Social Security made the decision to stop my benefits due to a paperwork error. In sorting out this error my benefits were not reestablished until May 2018. We had to borrow money from relatives to pay our rent, and were still behind for several months. When my benefits were reinstated, Social Security kept $3000 of the back payment to clear a balance I had with them which had already been under a payment plan. That sum was going to be used to pay back our relatives and purchase a new mattress, which obviously did not happen. I've been in chronic pain for about five years now and recently have gotten some relief from medical procedures. In order to continue healing I need to be comfortable sleeping. My physical therapist suggests I get a new mattress, with coils, that provides proper support. In addition, a new bed will benefit my wife as he suffers from mild sleep apnea. We need Modest Needs help with this cost.

After the last surgical procedure I had went well, I feel like I am waiting for the next shoe to drop. I have done something exciting and scary and I am starting the Practical Nursing Certificate program on August 14th, despite sometimes still being in so much pain that I cannot keep food down. My physical therapist continues to support me throughout this process, but without being able to rest comfortably there is no end in sight to my chronic pain or the problems it causes. Your help with something as simple as changing my mattress may be the difference between succeeding at school or failing.
