Wow! It was with a mixture of excitement, nervousness, and gratitude that I would open my daily e-mail updates from Modest Needs regarding my application. Excitement because I could watch my application progress, and I was thinking about a possible future with so much less stress if my application was funded; nervousness because I wasn't sure if I could count on the kindness of strangers to help me with this request, especially within a relatively short deadline; and gratitude because every time I watched my 'points' go up, I was deeply moved by the people who not only chose to donate to Modest Needs, but felt as though my application was worthy of funding. Although the anticipation throughout the application process was nerve-wracking, I also found it extremely gratifying to watch my points progress, often in 5 or 10 or 20 point increments. I know how much $5 or $10 or $20 can mean to folks who don't have a lot of money to spare, so to see that people were choosing to give to my application was deeply meaningful. I also, of course, have a deep appreciation for those donors who gave larger amounts to my application-you helped my application reach it's funding goal in a fraction of the time I was expecting! Almost all of the work I do, both paid and unpaid, could be summed up as 'working towards a different world.' Even though I see many acts of beauty and kindness every day, it's also easy to feel despair when we bear witness to the many injustices that currently exist. In it's own way, submitting this application and then watching it be fulfilled was a chance to rely on the ethics of care, community, and mutual aid that I build into my work, and it is with great humility and gratitude that I accept this opportunity to be a recipient of those things that I try to create and practice daily. Thanks to each and every one of you, truly. I already feel more at ease knowing I will soon have a safer vehicle that will help me and my clients get to where we are going. Social Worker Needs New Tires To Keep Her Job
My Story:
I am a young professional working for the Department of Children and Families to provide services and support to youth aging out of foster care. In my free time, I volunteer with several local organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Faith In Action, and a needle exchange program. I also run a group that supports people in prison by writing them letters and sending in stamps, envelopes, and occasional books.
If you've ever heard anything about social work, you probably know that it doesn't pay much! I love my work and budget carefully, but the extensive travel required has really created extra wear and tear on my car. I recently got a flat tire and found out that the spare that came with my car also has a slow leak and can't be used safely for very long. I was told that my other tires need to be replaced in relatively short order. My car also needed extensive brake work recently that wiped out my savings, and I wasn't prepared for this additional expense.
I need the help of Modest Needs for a new set of tires, without which puts me in danger while I drive my car and has the potential to do long-term damage to my drive train. Without functional tires, my clients won't be receiving the services they so very need and deserve, and I'll be at risk for losing my job as travel is an essential function of my work.
Your assistance will not only help me, but it will guarantee that the youth in foster care that I serve as a social worker will continue to have access to the services and support that they need.
