This morning when I checked my email, it brought me to tears to be told my request had been funded. I really had to take a minute and pull myself together. For the last week I had received a couple of calls and the letter reiterating the gas company planned to cap our tank at the end of the week. From the bottom of my heart I am thankful and more appreciative than you know. I have never found myself being the one who needs the help and have always helped whomever I could. I was embarrassed to ask but really had no other option. As a Mom it was terrible to have problems meeting my children's basic needs and I dreaded the thought of having to explain why we would not have hot water, be able to cook at our home or anything even close. This has been a very humbling experience, and while I do consider myself as very down to Earth (and so do those who are my friends) it really renews my faith in people that Modest Needs was actually able to help. I can never say thank you enough or tell you how hard I have struggled and continue to do whatever it takes, even when emotionally I almost feel I can't. I lost my Mother and my very best friend, and my whole life I watched her help and I have helped and thank goodness for all of you who thought enough to help..you really have been a guardian angel and helped pick me up when it's taken all of me mentally and physically just to keep on keeping on. I miss my Mother tremendously and the financial stress to boot... You are exactly the example my Mother spoke of and I do thank you. Never in my life have I had to count on or look for that compassionate or giving person... I was her. One day when my children are older and we talk about the perseverance, responsibility, and choices that define who we are, and how we should never give up, or reflect on how we came back from such a hard time, you will not be forgotten. Help Grieving Mom Keep Family in Hot Water and Food
My Story:
In addition to dealing with the grief of losing her mother, this Jacksonville, Florida woman finds herself in a financial bind after using the last of her savings to pay for her mother's funeral expenses. When an unusually high gas bill arrived, she turned to Modest Needs for help.
The gas heats this family's water, stove and other essentials. Without it, this mom will be unable to make a proper meal for her children or take a hot bath.
She tells Modest Needs, 'Assistance with this bill will let us focus and breathe and continue to work so we can continue to pay all of the responsibilities we normally take care of. When you go from being the helper to needing help, it's hard, not because you are humbled, but because you as a person who works every day and is responsible just gets stuck because of events that truly are out of your control.'
This grieving individual has nowhere else to turn. But with your help she can continue to process her loss, get her budget back in check and continue a life of self-sufficiency and independence. In fact, this applicant has new work, and is applying under our New Employment Grant, which means that with a one-time hand up, she will be back on her feet in no time.
