Furnace Repair For Disabled Couple

My Story:

I have been disabled since March of 1994 and have not been able to work since then. I have failed back syndrome and nerve root damage, which cannot be corrected. My wife is also disabled with arthritis and fibromyalgia and is in the process of appealing her Social Security claim. Our only income is my SSDI check, which leaves us just barely over income for any help from Health and Human Services. As far as health care coverage, I am eligible only for Medicare, which leaves a significant portion of my medical bills unpaid.

We do what we can to make our finances stretch and have some quality of life. We use the food pantry when we can. We pay all of our bills, and most times, we have to use our credit card at the end of the month to survive. We do everything we possibly can to save money, and we go without a lot of things in life that others take for granted (e.g. new clothes, entertainment, traveling to visit family, eating out, going to dentist/doctor on a regular basis). In the middle of winter this year, my furnace was red-tagged due to a bad heat exchanger. There was carbon monoxide coming into our house. The gas company turned off the furnace and we have been burning wood in a woodstove ever since.

If we do not fix this, there is a possibility our gas will be shut off, meaning we won't be able to use our stove or hot water. Using the woodstove has been hard on us because physically it is difficult to feed the fire around the clock. The gas company is saying the furnace has to be repaired or replaced. We got an estimate to replace the heat exchanger. The exchanger was still warrantied, but the cost of the labor is more than we can afford to pay The furnace is in otherwise good condition, and replacement of this part should take care of our problems.
