My son Chance was diagnosed with a Grade IV Glioblastoma Multiforme brain tumor cancer.

He needed to be transferred from our local Emergency Room to the University of Virginia Emergency Room for surgery. They told Chance that he needed an MRI immediately and find out at another hospital if they could do brain surgery on his type of brain tumor. Chance was not told that when he was transferred, it was through a private ambulance company to be transferred to UVA to have brain surgery immediately. He did not sign anything, but the ER Dr said he needed to go somewhere they could help him, which was going to be UVA. They should have informed us, but that is something we have now learned.

He was taken to UVA from our local hospital for emergency surgery. He had the surgery two days later, which was as soon as they could get his dilantin levels up high enough for brain surgery and schedule it. Also, they knew how to treat symptoms for a brain tumor, swelling and pressure until the surgery, which he had extreme amounts of pressure and headaches and they knew how to take care of those symptoms. Alleghany Regional did not know that steroid injections are given for severe pain, swelling, and pressure for a brain tumor.

After his surgery, our local hospital offered to have him transferred back but did not inform us that this was a private ambulance company.

Chance was approved by both hospitals for charity prior to the procedures, which unfortunately does not cover the ambulance. Social Services has finally put him on Medallion in our state of Virginia, which makes him eligible for Medicaid, but does not cover this bill. Any help that you could offer would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
