I am a 41-year-old male who has been living with MS for the past 20 years. I am still able to walk a bit with the help of a cane, but the combination of fatigue, pain and muscle spasms associated with my disease have prevented me from working for the past five years. I finally qualified for SS Disability in 2008, and that has helped me out tremendously.

In 2006, I moved from Oregon to Georgia to live near my parents who are both in their 80's now, and have an even harder time getting around than I do. I see them several times a week and help them around their house as much as possible. Unfortunately, the symptoms of my disease have worsened in the past several months, and my ability to help them has decreased.

My neurologist orders an MRI every year to detect and track any progression of my MS. If there is significant progression they will suggest another, more aggressive, course of treatment.

Over the past three years I have received deductible and co-pay assistance for my annual MRI from the MS Association of America but, due to the economy, the Association has issued a new set of guidelines that only allow for MRI assistance every two years.

I believe that my condition has worsened over the past year and I wanted to have this MRI performed. Unfortunately, due to my limited income and the MSAA's new rules, I had to cancel this year's MRI scheduled for end of July.

I heard about Modest Needs and thought I would give it a shot. I am not looking for a handout, as I usually manage to get by on a month-to-month basis. However, this annual diagnostic procedure is very important and I am extremely worried about my situation; my parents, myself and my condition. I know that having an MRI would reveal some new insight into how my disease is progressing, possibly leading to a new, more proactive course of treatment. Any help I could receive to have an MRI performed this year would make a world of difference to me.

Thank you for your consideration.
