On June 29, 2009 I broke my right foot, which incapacitated me for the summer, and I had to rely on the kindness of neighbors to help me get groceries, etc. since I could not drive or walk. I am on SSDI for other health issues, and did not yet have Medicare coverage so I had to rely on Medi-Cal, which turned out to be a nightmare.
Medi-Cal determined that I should be able to live on $600 (40% of my SSDI), and that I should be able to afford a per month 'share of cost' of $885 (or 60% of my SSDI)) for medical care. SSDI is my sole income, and I have no savings. I don't know anyone who can live on $600 a month even if they are living out of their car. In addition, they required that I pay the first $885 BEFORE they would pay any of the providers. Between June 29th and September 29th the medical costs associated with my foot fracture totaled approximately $2600. Because my Medi-Cal 'share of cost' was so high, Medi-Cal covered only those costs above $885 for the first day when I went to the ER. And the only way they would even cover that was if I could pay the $885 FIRST, which I could not do.
Because of that the ER doctor's billing service began threatening to send me to a collection agency (doctors bill separately from the hospital). Over the next two months I worked with Mercy Hospital to get them write-off their charges and apply it to my Medi-Cal insurance so Medi-Cal would pick up the rest of the cost for that one day, including the ER doctor's bill. In July, August and September I did not meet the share of cost so Medi-Cal paid none of my expenses for additional x-rays, Mt. Shasta Medi-Cal Clinic, etc.
Fortunately, again, I was able to get Mercy to write-off the costs of x-rays. However, I still owe $302 to Mt. Shasta Medi-Cal Clinic, which I cannot afford to pay because I had many other medical expenses associated with this foot fracture such as seeing an orthopedic specialist, buying a walking boot, renting a wheelchair, etc.
My out-of-pocket expenses were more than $500. To further aggravate my financial situation, I have just discovered that I have some dental problems that need to be addressed immediately before they deteriorate further. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in paying the $302.60 invoice from Mt. Shasta Medi-Cal Clinic.
