New Beginning for Me & My Boy

I am a single mother of one living in Detroit; I am asking for help with a car repair. As many of you know, Michigan has the highest unemployment rate in the nation and we were hit by this downturn about 18 months prior to the rest of the country. I was a victim of that downturn about a year and half ago. I had worked for the City of Detroit's water department for five years, having taken the job after dropping out of college when my ex left shortly after my son's first birthday. I wasn't getting rich, but I had a decent wage and benefits. Then the city laid me and hundreds of others off, in an attempt to rectify a budget deficit, and I have been unable to find full-time work since.
I worked at Target and the local Humane Society congruently, until I decided the additional hours would be better spent finishing my degree so I would be more marketable and have a greater chance of landing a full-time job. I am now 12 credit hours away from my degree. But due to a series of auto thefts and break-ins, my car is on its last leg. I have been riding around with a hole in my windshield, and tape where the rear window should be, for two months now.
When I went to get an estimate for that, I was told my brakes and rotors are shot and that my tire rods are going as well. The steering column was business in the first break-in, and until recently I hadn't been able to drive the car at all. My church helped me fix the steering and now I am desperately seeking out a means to do the rest so that I can commute to work and complete my degree so that the future of me and my son can begin to take shape.
I have laid awake wondering how I would get this done and have sought out help from ways to work with my local Department of Human Resources to no avail. It would mean the world to me if someone out there could find it in their heart to help me pull out of this world and move on to what I pray will be a bright new beginning for me and my little boy.
